{"description":"Thank you so much for tuning in to this year\u2019s Hear Now festival. I\u2019m honored that my piece, Holy Order: Shaker Dances, is included among so many wonderful compositions in today\u2019s concert. \nHoly Order: Shaker Dances is a short tone poem that attempts to recreate a Shaker religious service.   While the Shaker hymns have found their way into modern-day hymnals, a lesser-known aspect of the Shaker experience was the dance - as it was believed that dancing liberated the soul and invited the temporary possession of the individual by spirits from the Beyond. One by one, they would stomp, scratch, tremble, screech, shuffling their feet, etc.  When worship service was over, they would slow down and drop off, one by one, just as oddly as it began.  \nThe work is divided into 5 sections that coenside with the dances from their worship service: The Holy Order, the Regular Step, the Back Manner, Quick Dance, and the Heavy Shuffle.   The main idea of the work is to build up a series of unpredictable textures, tunes, harmonies and rhythmic timing out of the simplest of most familiar musical material from the Shaker Hymns while musically depicting their curious habits just described.","height":1716,"html":"<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:41.8945%\"><iframe src=\"https://muse.ai/embed/NS2PZYv\" style=\"width:100%;height:100%;position:absolute;left:0;top:0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"fullscreen\" allowfullscreen></iframe></div>","provider_name":"Skiv","provider_url":"https://skiv.com","thumbnail_height":198,"thumbnail_url":"https://cdn.skiv.com/u/8dfZQkd/d06ee5f954fe8d4ba4e0c43eee4330af1bc6262a463b717090009ef746a0734f/thumbnails/thumbnail.jpg","thumbnail_width":352,"title":"Holy Order Shaker Dances, Hear Now Festival 2021","type":"video","url":"https://muse.ai/v/NS2PZYv","version":"1.0","width":4096}
